You could choose to spend $5-7 on quality bone broth from your local store, or you could follow this stupid easy bone broth recipe and make it yourself with just leftover food scraps.

I am thankful good brands like Kettle and Fire, Bare Bones, and Perfect Supplements exist- because many of my clients are overwhelmed and can’t handle one more thing on their plate. They even have these awesome travel friendly bone broth powders you can mix just in hot water. You would love them. However, if you find yourself wondering if this could possibly be simpler and cheaper to make at home- I am here to encourage you to try.

I promise you can make your own. It isn’t complicated. You don’t even have to follow the recipe exactly. I personally make roasted chicken a couple times a month and save the carcass, juices, and vegetables all in a ziplock bag for broth making day later on. When I have 2 in the freezer- it is the ideal time to follow the recipe below and make broth.

The most important parts:

The ratio will matter more than you being out of celery.

Also, for a richer flavor- Roast your bones and vegetable before hand.

Short on time? That’s fine. You can skip the roasting step and still have perfect gut healing bone broth that was so stupid simple to make and impress all your friends.

How do I know if I succeeded?

You’ll know you’ve succeeded when your broth is rich in color, gelatinous when cold, and rich in flavor.

Bone broth is both gut healing as well as protein rich and low in calories. Each cup equals roughly 10g of protein and makes a great addition to any meal. This will also be a great base for soups and for cooking rice with rich flavor

Bone broth is a common recommendation for those struggling with unwanted digestive upsets like food sensitivities, bloating, or even emergency bathroom visits.

Troubleshooting:

My bone broth is sour:

You possibly didn’t have enough salt. Try adding a pinch or two per cup and see if it improves.

My bone broth was not gelatinous:

Your ratio was possibly too low on bones- this is the gelatin source. You can still use the broth, but try again next time with more bones or less water

My bone broth is lacking flavor:

This could be any or the above, or also that you may have needed to add more acid.

You can also try and roast your bones and vegetable previously. This makes the flavor richer.

Stupid Easy Homemade Bone Broth

The short cut version to making your own gut healing protein rich bone broth.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 4 hours
Servings 4 quarts

Equipment

  • 1 Instant pot Or stove top pot

Ingredients
  

  • 4 lb bones 2 chicken carcasses
  • 2-3 carrots rough chop
  • 2-3 celery stalks rough chop leaves included
  • 1 large onion
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • 1 Tbs whole peppercorns
  • 1 Tbs kosher salt
  • 1 splash apple cider vinegar
  • 2 bay leave

Instructions
 

  • Fill your pot 3/4 way with bones
  • Add in all vegetables, seasonings, and ACV
  • Fill with water just over (1-2in) the height of the bones
  • Simmer in Instant Pot for 4 hours, or stove top/crock pot for 12 hours
  • Cool
  • When cool, strain and transfer into freeze proof containers.
  • As the liquid cooks, any extra fat will separate and move to the top, allowing you to remove if desired
  • Freeze to thaw and use as needed
